The source of the extract is the rhizome of the perennial herb Chuanqiong of the family Umbelliferae. Rhizoma ligustici chuanxiong heights 40-60 cm. Roots well-developed, forming irregular nodular fist-shaped masses, with strong aroma. Stem erect, terete, longitudinally striate, much branched distally, lower stem nodes expanded discoid (lingzi. Lower leaves stipitate; stipe 3-10 cm long; base enlarged into; leaf blade ovate-triangular in outline 12-15 cm long, 10-15 cm wide, 3-4 times ternately pinnatisect, pinnae 4-5 pairs, ovate-lanceolate, 6-7 m long by 5-6 cm wide, ultimate segments linear-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, 2-5 mm long by 1-2 mm wide, mucronulate; distal leaves of stem acuminate. Umbels terminal or lateral; racemes 3-6, linear, 0.5-2.5 cm; rays 7-24 unequal, 2-4 cm, inner side scabrous; racelets 4-8, linear, 3-5 mm, scabrous.
